Nursing is more than a career with shifts. Every day, nurses around the world walk into their job sites and affect the lives of those under their care. The nurses' talents and interests lead them toward their practices or specialties. My interests are problem solving and continual learning.

After graduating nursing school in 2014, I got hired into a Nurse Residency Program. I started in an intensive care unit. The fast-paced, highly-skilled environment intensified my desire to push myself further.

I focus my passion on critically ill patients, and I always learn something new. These accumulating experiences will help future patients who have not been fully diagnosed. Those patients become puzzles, and practitioners and specialists work together to find solutions.

The problem solving is an exhilarating process. In the race to diagnose and save the patient, everything gets considered. Test results get reviewed. Assessment abnormalities get investigated. And interventions get trialed. The process excites me. Solving the patient-puzzle drives me to be a nurse practitioner.

I am motivated and inspired by the nurses, nurse practitioners, and doctors who I work with. They seek education about disease processes and associated management, new treatment modalities, and new research. Their thirst for knowledge sparked my desire to pursue an advanced education of my own. I want to learn and grow in my nursing practice. This expertise will help find those missing puzzle pieces that will provide comprehensive treatment for the patients.

I am excited about the opportunity for graduate study at The University of Michigan. I want to learn more about disease processes and the treatments, all guided by the nursing theory of treating the whole patient, instead of only the ailments.

When looking into the future as a nurse, I see much growth and potential. I plan to keep working in the intensive care arena, during my graduate schooling, and I want to continue in that field after graduation. The intensive care unit is a great place to learn a lot. I want to gain an immense amount of practical knowledge and experience while in the unit.

After spending several years in the acute care arena as a nurse practitioner, I’d like to switch to another goal: teaching nursing students at the college level. I want to get a Certificate in Nursing Education, during my studies.

I am also motivated by the fabulous educators who taught me in nursing school. Their passion for their practices and desire to educate the fledgling nurses inspired me. Teachers are at their best when they love their subject areas, and when they share their interests with students. My love for nursing and learning will help me become one of those passionate educators.

Nursing's educational opportunities motivate me. The University of Michigan’s Adult Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner program will help me reach my potential. It will make me an integral part of any health care team.
